Xylem Pumps Come Through in the Clutch for Two Baseball Stadiums

The games go on in New York City because our pumps are taking care of business -- handling the flow of wastewater and storm water at Yankee Stadium and keeping the Citi Field environment comfortable.

Xylem pumps have a history of performing at sporting arenas, from Flygt pumps pushing water through Olympic kayak courses to heat exchanger pumps warming Super Bowl stadiums. Now, add Yankee Stadium and Mets Citi Field to this list. Behind the scenes at these two New York City-based baseball parks – both of which opened in 2009 – Xylem pumps are hard at work to ensure there are no errors when it comes to the pump systems.

When owners of the New York Yankees decided to build a new stadium, they knew they needed the most efficient and reliable pumps to handle critical tasks. “When the stadium is in full use, the bathroom toilets must perform flawlessly at an extremely high level, “says Jules Leibman, Chairman of G.A. Fleet Associates, a manufacturer representative specializing in plumbing and fire protection systems. “They needed a pump system that could handle that kind of pressure.”

The stadium engineering design firm did not initially choose a Xylem Flygt pump system, but the Yankee management team and other contractors convinced the firm to switch. “Flygt pumps were not the most inexpensive choice, but they were considered to be the most reliable over the life of the system,” says Leibman.

More than 25 Flygt pumps located underground at the stadium transport sewage from the bathrooms and the concession area. When the stadium is in full use, the pumps can handle 500 gallons of water a minute. Flygt pumps also transport storm water and groundwater from the stadium into the municipal system.

The pumps have been in service for three years with no maintenance problems. “There have been zero maintenance problems; no clogging, no replacements and no service requirements.” says John D’iorio, Executive Vice President, G.A. Fleet Associates.

Across town, Xylem’s Bell and Gossett products are keeping the temperature comfortable at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets. Bell & Gossett Series 1510 pumps and accessories are providing the hot water heating system and the chilled water air conditioning system for the ballpark’s concourses, offices, lockers and retail space.

“Our goal was to provide a top quality heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system at a reasonable cost,” says Stephen Martin, Engineer Product Sales Manager, Wallace Eannace Associates, the manufacturer’s representative for Bell & Gossett. “After several site visits, we are content that we not only met the expectations of our client, but exceeded them.”

“Bell & Gossett products are extremely reliable,” says Mark Handzel, Director of Building Services Marketing, Xylem Residential and Commercial Water. “Our Series 1510 pumps are the most popular centrifugal pumps in the HVAC industry. They will provide Citi Field with low energy consumption and dependable operation for many years.”
